Most of my work is for large companies such as Johnson & Johnson, major medical technology manufacturers, and research institutions. But I really enjoy working with early stage companies, and I leverage my knowledge of what large companies value to help early stage clients. For example, I’ve worked on numerous due diligence projects, so I know what strategic investors are looking for. I use this knowledge to counsel my early stage companies – to help them develop effective and valuable portfolios and to keep them on the road to success. My practice focuses on patent and trademark matters for clients in sectors including medical technology, polymers and advanced materials, polymer processing technologies, and chemicals. I can counsel your new venture on all phases of patent and trademark law — through development strategy, protection, and exploitation of your company’s critical patent and trademark rights.
Fun facts:
I have been a competitive swimmer for most of my life. These days, instead of racing in swimming pools, I have become a big fan of open water swimming. I’ve competed in a number of great races, including the Boston Light Swim, the Chesapeake Bay Swim, the Harrington Sound Swim, the Maui Channel Swim, and the Nubble Light Challenge. Once on a training swim in Maui, my buddy and I encountered a 10 foot long tiger shark quite a way from the beach. The shark wasn’t hungry, so we both lived to tell about it. I enjoy golf, hiking with my chocolate lab (Kona), and spending time on the New Hampshire seacoast with my family.
If I weren’t a lawyer, I would be …
an engineer/entrepreneur, probably in the medical device space because I have always been fascinated about how things work and I’ve always been interested in the interface of medicine and technology.
The most unusual thing in my office is …
a great collection of cutting edge (pun intended) surgical devices and medical implants.
The most valuable lesson I’ve learned in business is …
it is always about communication. Regardless of the business, people need great communication skills. We need to be able to explain our ideas or plans, get our partners and investors on board, and constantly keep others apprised of our successes and/or any alterations to the plan.
