MintzTech Connect: All Things Technology — September 2024

By Daniel I. DeWolf, Samuel Asher Effron

Dear Readers,

And just like that, the weather has changed, and now it is fall on the East Coast! Where did the days of summer go?

As to the current state of the venture capital market, while later- and growth-stage companies are still finding it challenging to find new capital, we are witnessing no slow-up in early-stage venture capital financings. Further, as the year progresses, we anticipate increased investments in seed and early-stage investments as the smart money takes advantage of a repriced marketplace. We also expect some pickup in secondary transactions as the recent trough of liquidity will result in more investors selling out their positions rather than waiting for a conventional liquidity event. Lastly, we are including a video clip from our recent co-sponsored event with the Sustainable Media Center, which featured a discussion between Jonathan Haidt, author of The Anxious Generation, and well-known podcaster and professor Scott Galloway. The topic discussed is incredibly important and on the minds of parents across the country: how do we mitigate the harm to children and teens from social media and their unfettered access to smartphones?

We have fantastic content in this edition of MintzTech Connect. We lead off with an article about a federal court blocking the FTC’s efforts to limit non-competition restrictions. It’s a huge blow to the FTC’s efforts, but this issue will need to wind its way through the court system before there is a clear resolution. We follow with a terrific article regarding issues that foreign companies must be mindful of as they expand into the US. Lastly, our company spotlight is on an interesting new enterprise called GUDEA. GUDEA is a pioneering technology company revolutionizing how digital narratives are understood and managed. Founded in 2023 by seasoned experts in military operations, politics, and artificial intelligence, GUDEA offers a unique platform akin to a meteorological service for the internet. The company’s technology — which takes in information from over 35 online platforms — enables organizations to predict, map, and influence information flows across social networks before they impact public perception.
